Construction of Classroom Block Project -
Nigeria
In January 2013 the Fund approved a sum of
€8,000 for the construction of a three classroom block for a literacy
programme at Puissa, Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria.
The building was roofed and ready for use
in mid January 2014 when the first three month course began. When the
course was over in April the remaining work on the plastering etc.
continued. In total there are now six classrooms and thirty five rooms
for accommodation already in place.
A total of 540 pupils - 310 male and 230
female, between the ages of 10 and 18 years of age attended this first
course and were from a very large area roughly the size of a large Irish
County. They will attend the course for a minimum of 3 years after which
they will receive a Certificate in Literacy and Basic Arithmetic. The
course provides an introduction to education for those who will never
have an opportunity to attend school.
As can be seen from the photos below while
the conditions are primitive the people appear happy and content.
